New Year’s Resolution: Get Out from Under the Cloud

We do it year after year. We often make huge goals for our New Year’s resolutions…and more often than not we see those resolutions slip right through our fingers. If your goal is to quit smoking or to quit using tobacco this year, there is FREE help that works on many different levels of your addiction.

The Smoking Cessation class offered at St. Alexius Medical Center is a program developed by the American Lung Association. No single way works for everyone, so this program incorporates many techniques, tools and tips developed over the past several decades including: behavior modification, nicotine addiction, weight management, stress relief and choosing an overall healthy lifestyle.

This program has been a great success. The program is facilitated by two Registered Respiratory Therapists at St. Alexius Medical Center who have been specially trained in the program. The following is a brief description of the seven sessions of the program:

1. Orientation: Making the decision and commitment to the class

2. Individuals look at their habit and work on motivation to quit, introduce relaxation techniques

3. Plan of Action: including nicotine replacement therapy etc.

4. Quit Night

5. 48 hour report, extra support for staying smoke (or tobacco) free

6. Maintenance Techniques

7. Staying Quit – Making a plan of action to stay smoke (or tobacco) free

The Freedom From Smoking classes will be offered:

  • February 22 through March 29
  • April 5 through May 10
  • May 24 through June 28

At the present time, St. Alexius Medical Center is offering these classes at no cost to the participant. In addition to the classes, the participant will receive a $50.00 coupon to be used toward nicotine replacement products. This has been made possible by a grant through Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health Unit and the Master Tobacco Settlement.

For more information and to register, call the St. Alexius Education Department at 530-7700 or toll free at 1-800-843-9628.
