Craniosacral Therapy – Human Performance Center

Few systems have as much impact on the human body as the craniosacral system. It protects and nourishes the brain and spinal cord and affects nearly every aspect of the central nervous systems performance. Malfunctions of this system has been linked to the development of global body pain complaints but especially headaches, neck pain, and low back pain. If you’ve received more conventional therapies in the past (physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, etc), without long-term relief, Craniosacral Therapy may be of benefit to you.

Craniosacral Therapy was developed by Dr. John Upledger as a treatment approach for individuals with dysfuntions of the craniosacral system. The goal of craniosacral therapy is to enhance fluid flow and fascial tissue mobility throughout the body, normalizing the craniosacral system and allowing the body to self-correct. This goal is achieved by low-force, manual therapy techniques applied to various sites of the body including the head, spine, pelvis, and other related areas.

Craniosacral Therapy has been shown to be beneficial for both acute and chronic pain conditions, including degenerative arthritis. It can lower fever as much as four degrees Fahrenheit. It can reduce cerebal and pulmonary congestions, and dependent edema. It has been used to improve auto-immune disease, autistic behavior of children and anxiety. This technique can benefit most individuals to some degree and is rarely, if ever, harmful.

The initial treatment session is typically one hour in length, allowing for assessment of craniosacral restrictions head-to-toe, followed by implementation of the ten-step treatment protocol. Follow-up session are 30-60 minutes in length, with patients typically requiring three to five session for maximum benefit. Patients should note a 30-50% reduction in their pain within the first several treatment sessions if Craniosacral Therapy will be of benefit, eliminating the concern of expensive, drawn-out services that prove ineffective in the end.
