The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the ANCC of Silver Spring, MD, to recognize health care organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and uphold the tradition within nursing of professional nursing practice. The program also provides sharing of best practices in nursing care among organizations that employ nurses. Achieving Magnet designation helps consumers locate health care organizations that have a proven level of excellence in nursing care.

Linda Knodel, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, and St. Alexius staff, principally nursing staff, have worked very hard over the past two years to provide evidence of the criteria required by the ANCC to be awarded this prestigious recognition. It is the highest level of recognition that the ANCC can give to organized nursing services on the national and international level.

Studies of Magnet™ hospitals show that patients at those facilities average a shorter length of stay and a higher rate of satisfaction. Nurses are more satisfied with their work and the care they provide and hospitals have an increased rate of retention among nurses. Being a Magnet™ hospital has a great distinction surrounding it, and that distinction really is an extension of the outstanding work performed by St. Alexius’ nursing staff on a daily basis.
