Healing Interior Design

by Lynn K. Prouty

A brand new space with old world charm.

The mood is calm and peaceful, due in large part to the low lighting and

tranquil music. Creating an environment conducive to healing depends on

everything being chosen with intention. The result is a place where people

feel comfortable. A living room setting replaces conventional rows of

chairs. A pond spouts two cranes, symbols of longevity. Artwork abounds.

The inspiration for the colors come from the works of Maxfield Parrish,

Hyper-realism, where colors seem more intense than real life. Vessel

saffron sinks contrast verdigris surfaces combined with strong hunter

green and a splash of peridot. Green is a soothing color associated with

growth and healing. Yellow helps us focus on the matter at hand. It is a

grounding color that gets our attention and cheers us up. Copper hardware

is unexpected, useful and beautiful. There are no square rooms. Instead,

like life there are winding paths and angles that add interest to the

journey. The flow is like a stroll in the park with places to pause and

reflect. Five niches suspend sculptures that symbolize the elements of

water, wood, fire, metal, and earth present in all of us. When people are

surrounded by the five elements they feel a balance. Each room is

identified with an Italian garden landscape plaque with a name like

“Harmony”, “Serenity”, and “Contentment”

rather than Exam 1, 2, or 3. Intentionally there are no televisions or

reminders of the outside world. Attention to detail comes through in

hand-painted light fixtures, nearly fifty in total. The universal symbol

of balance, Yin-Yang, hangs from a pendant fixture upon entering.

Recognizing that people feel better in pleasing places the Center for

Integrated Medicine was designed for patients, providers and visitors to

experience a place of peace.
