HPC Celebrates 25 Years

Posted on 5/12/2006

The Human Performance Center (HPC) at St. Alexius Medical Center is celebrating 25 years in sports medicine. The HPC, formally known as the Institute of Sports Medicine (ISM), was established in 1981.

The first technological advancement brought to this area by the St. Alexius Institute of Sports Medicine was the Cybex Isokinetic Equipment. This device measured torque development at 300 degrees of motion per second. The Institute of Sports Medicine quickly became well known for its expertise in the care of athletes. The ISM enjoyed the expertise and guidance of physicians from nearly every specialty. Their support contributed to the development of a medical student rotation in sports medicine.

In 1990 St. Alexius lead the way with a new program designed to enhance athletic performance. St. Alexius was the first facility in North Dakota to purchase the Frappier Acceleration Sports Training Program (FAST). FAST allowed St. Alexius to provide athletes the best training to prepare for their chosen sport while the ISM provided the most advanced therapy if they unfortunately sustained an injury.

FAST has now grown to be the world’s largest network of facilities dedicated to the training of athletes.

HPC is not just for athletes, though. Today its fitness program has more than 1,000 active members.
