Surviving Breast Cancer

Many women with breast cancer are forced to question why they have this disease. They may have no family history or risk factors. They range in age from early 30’s to those nearing their 100th birthday. No matter their age, the goal is the same…survival.
Some women feel guilt at the thought of passing the disease on to their daughters. I see women rally their family members and friends to get mammograms. Some women reach out to others with breast cancer to offer much needed support.
I facilitate the Mastectomy Education and Discussion Group held the third Thursday of every month (excluding December) at Great Plains Rehabilitation Services (GPRS) on 12th and Main at 7 p.m. The meeting includes an education forum, general discussion and an opportunity to form friendships with fellow survivors. “Reach to Recovery” is an organization of volunteers from the American Cancer Society who reach out to newly diagnosed women to assist in their journey to survival as well.
The women I have met are open, expressive and sensitive. They have the capacity to see the world in a positive way. These women have given me a new attitude on life. It is a privilege and an honor to get to know them on a personal level. At GPRS we fit women with post-mastectomy products ranging from breast forms and surgical bras, to swimsuits and nightgowns. Insurance coverage is available for many mastectomy supplies. You must be seen by your doctor yearly for a prescription for insurance and Medicare coverage. Please call our customer service at 701-530-4500 if you have any coverage questions.
