Emergency Room Re-Verified as a Level II Trauma Center
The St. Alexius Emergency & Trauma Center has been re-verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
The COT’s Verification/Consultation Program for Hospitals was established in 1987 to promote the development of trauma centers. Facilities with Trauma Centers not only have the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process.
Verified Trauma Centers must meet the essential criteria outlined by the ACS to ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance. The ACS’ COT does not designate trauma centers, it confirms that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality of care for all injured patients. The criteria for a Level II Trauma Center include 24-hour immediate coverage by general surgeons, as well as coverage in the specialties of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology and critical care. St. Alexius also is capable of providing cardiac surgery, hemodialysis and microvascular surgery. Level II Trauma Centers also must show a commitment to trauma prevention and to continuing education of trauma team members.
To assess its quality of care, the Level II Trauma Center is dedicated to continued improvement through a comprehensive quality assessment program. St. Alexius not only met all of these requirements, but received many compliments during the survey by ACS. Congratulations to all staff that made this possible!
