Conquering
Cancer through Cooperation
The Bismarck Cancer Center
St. Alexius Medical Center and
Medcenter One Health Systems have combined a team of highly skilled
healthcare professionals with state-of-the art equipment to care for our
patients who receive radiation therapy. Coupled with additional cancer
services at the medical center, patients can receive the full continuum
of cancer care closer to home.
The Bismarck Cancer Center offers a
complete array of services for radiation oncology. In addition to
radiation therapy and CAT scan planning, patients and families receive
support such as nutritional counseling, pastoral care and social services.
Healthcare professionals at the Center
work as a team to plan the best treatment for each patient. These
professionals link patients to resources within the two healthcare
facilities and services throughout the region. The Bismarck Cancer Center
fills a need for radiation therapy services in the upper Midwest, a region
of more than 300,000 people, with an estimated 1,600 cancer cases
annually.
The Bismarck Cancer Center is an
accomplishment of which we are very proud. The Center is a reflection of
the values we uphold. Our values of community and healing presence are
very visible in the care that is now available for our patients. We
recognized that the best way to uphold our value of stewardship is by
forming a cooperative partnership in offering these radiation services.
St.
Alexius establishes Stroke Center
Dr. S. Shiraz Hyder, a neurologist
with the Neurology Clinic, has seen too many individuals suffer
devastating effects from stroke. He feels the lack of knowledge about
stroke symptoms can delay people from seeking immediate medical attention.
“Seeking urgent medical attention can make a difference between quick
recovery and long-term disability, or even death,” Hyder said. He
mentions that time is of the essence when treating stroke. The first three
hours from onset are critical.
The Stroke Center at St. Alexius is the
first of its kind in the region. It was created to improve the overall
quality of care for people in our region afflicted by stroke. In addition,
the Center supports efforts relating to prevention and early intervention
of stroke-related disorders.
“Strokes are the leading cause of
disability in the United States,” says Dr. Hyder, who serves as
medical director of The Stroke Center. He continues, “At St. Alexius,
we support the acute and long-term management of patients who have
suffered strokes.” The medical team for strokes includes
neurologists, emergency and trauma professionals, physiatrists,
pharmacists, nurses, psychologists, social workers; physical, speech and
occupational therapists.
St. Alexius works in cooperation with the
National Stroke Association and the American Heart Association’s Stroke
Council.
St.
Alexius opens Same Day Surgery Center
The St. Alexius Same Day Surgery
Center (SDSC) opened last fall in the newly renovated Medical Arts Plaza.
SDSC is a result of the trend in health care to gravitate toward same day,
or ambulatory services. It features three operating rooms with the
potential to expand to four.
The Same Day Surgery Center is unique
because it can utilize all of the resources of the Medical Center in terms
of services and equipment. This means a cost savings that will ultimately
be passed on to patients. Being located on-campus means patients are in
close proximity to additional personnel and services should an emergency
situation arise.
Same day, outpatient hospital-based and
inpatient surgery are the three types of surgical options available at St.
Alexius. Same day, or ambulatory surgery, is an outpatient surgery option
that is completed in one day. Patients are admitted to the SDSC, undergo
their procedure, move into the recovery area and are discharged the same
day. This differs from the outpatient hospital-based unit. Patients in
this area undergo their procedure, move into recovery, and spend the night
in the 23-hour hold area. Some patient procedures, because of the patients
medical condition, or because of insurance regulation, will continue to
use the hospital-based surgery area even though the patient will be
discharged the same day.
The St. Alexius Same Day Surgery Center
positions St. Alexius in terms of facility, technology and staff to meet
the trends in health care.
