I think most kids would agree recess is probably their favorite assignment.

Reporter Sarah Gustin takes us to the park where some students are burning off all that classroom energy. “It is that time of the year that they are anxious for summer, so when they heard it was summer fun and safety day they were so excited to here that we get to go outside and play games and do fun things outside,” says Maria Neset, 3rd Grade Teacher. Summer Fun and Safety day is all about learning while having a whole lot of fun.

Nearly 16-hundred Bismarck-Mandan 1st and 3rd graders are spending their morning classroom time at the park. They are having a whole lot of fun and they don’t even realize they are doing a whole lot of learning.

Julie Fudge, St. Alexius, explains, “They are going to experience alot of different things today, all of the booths are action orientated. They are going to get a chance to look at a fire truck, some police cars, they are going to get a chance to go through a smokehouse with the Fire Department, there is obstacle courses, face Painting, there are booths on weather safety, poison safety and stranger awareness and there are just a lot of different safety topics that the kids are going to have a hands on opportunity to experience.”

One of the main attractions seems to be what it is like to be a state patrol officer for the day. “I think that alot of the children enjoy the smokehouse and getting to experience things that they don’t typically do in a classroom, so it is that out of a classroom setting,” says Fudge.

“I think that it is fun for them to see classmates from other schools and then they get to learn about summer weather, fun activities they can do in the summer and all sorts of safety types of things,” states Neset. According to Fudge, “Basically just anything that will help them stay safe this summer. It is a great opportunity for them to get a little reminder before they head out in the summer months.” And for the kids spending their summer in the country there is even a little farm safety. This is Summer Fun and Safety Day’s 12th year.
