SocialSecurity / Medicare 2001 Changes

For 2001, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) monthly benefits will increase by 3 ½ percent. This is the highest cost of living increase since 1992.

The new limits on the amount of money a person can earn from working in 2001 and still receive their full Social Security benefits has increased to $10,680 for persons under age 65. There is no limit for persons age 65 and older. Persons becoming age 65 in 2001 can earn up to $25,000 for the months in 2001 that are prior to their reaching age 65.

The 2001 basic Medicare Part B premium increases from $45.50 to $50.00. People who previously refused Part B and now want this coverage can sign up for Part B during the general enrollment period beginning January 1, 2001 and ending March 31, 2001.
