Asthma Clinic Moves to Lincoln

Five years ago, Tammy Hogue was watching an asthma story on KFYR. It was through that story that she realized her son, Coltan, showed some of the symptoms. He went to the doctor and was diagnosed. Since then, Coltan has been treating his condition with the help of St. Alexius` asthma clinic, which recently moved to a new location in Lincoln.
Coltan Hogue is thankful for the treatment and information he receives during his visits at the St. Alexius Regional Children’s Asthma Clinic. Without his inhalers and medicine, he can’t control his asthma.
“It’s pressure. You can’t breathe in all the way. When you go outside in the cold it’s hard to catch your breath,” explained Coltan.
The free clinic gives patients access to a doctor, an asthma educator, a pharmacist and a school nurse to address all families` concerns.
“When you leave asthma clinic you really feel good because the pharmacist sits down and goes through everything with you. The nurse goes through everything with you,” said Tammy. “I felt really confident and educated.”
The clinic also helps children create asthma diaries and action plans, so they know how to take care of themselves at school.
“It lets the school know if a child is having symptoms or if their peak flows are down. What medication they can use, and how much of it they’re supposed to use. It also has their emergency contact info on the top,” said Rajean Backman, respiratory therapist and asthma educator.
“This is so nice and wide open and lots of parking. It’s really great. I would drive miles to go to this clinic,” said Tammy. “It doesn’t matter where it’s at.”
And the Hogues certainly do put in the miles. They come to Lincoln for treatment from their home in Solen, and Tammy calls the clinic a blessing in her life.
The St. Alexius Regional Children’s Asthma Clinic is funded through a children’s services grant from the St. Alexius foundation.
