As part of its 125 anniversary celebration, St. Alexius administrators and employees braved cool and cloudy weather Wednesday to dig up a time capsule buried 25 years ago. In its place, a new time capsule was buried. The time capsule unearthed today was buried in 1985 when St. Alexius celebrated is centennial anniversary.
“This was a fun event for everyone to take part in. As we recognize the many years of hard work from all of our employees, we also take time to reflect back on all the achievements and changes the Medical Center has experienced,” said Andrew L. Wilson, President and CEO of St. Alexius Medical Center. Inside the capsule were numerous photos and publication from the year, a three-quarter inch video tape, a commemorative silver medallion and a brick from the original Lamborn Hospital, among other items. The 2010 time capsule, buried in the same location, contained a cell phone and palm pilot, a publication recognizing 125 years of healing, a medallion given to St. Alexius in recognition of being designated the first top-ranked nursing facility in the state and a list of current employees.
“St. Alexius has changed quite a bit in the last 125 years, evolving into the world-class medical center it is today,” says Wilson. “But the one thing that hasn’t changed through the years is our dedication to healing those who are suffering and our mission ‘Let All Be Received As Christ.'”
St. Alexius Medical Center is recognizing its 125 anniversary all year. On May 4, 1885, the hospital, then called the Lamborn Hospital, officially opened its doors for business. One day later, the hospital admitted its first patient.
