Go Red For Women

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and it’s highly preventable. Every year the American Heart Association brings attention to the disease through it’s Go Red for women movement.

By wearing red, the American Heart Association hopes women will be empowered to have a healthy heart.

One-third of women will die from heart disease. Cardiologists say it’s flown under the radar in part because women’s symptoms are different from men’s. Women don’t normally feel the heavy pressure and discomfort in their chests, instead they feel fatigued and just not themselves. And for moms on the go, there really isn’t any time to get to the root of the problem.

“Women are the drivers of the health care system and frequently they take care of everybody else but they don’t take care of themselves. What we`re trying to do is empower women to take care of themselves first,” said St. Alexius Chief of Cardiology Dr. John Windsor.

Doctors say women need to get regular screenings, especially if they have a family history of heart disease, have a balanced diet and of course exercise.
