The Labor and Delivery unit at St. Alexius Medical Center was quiet the first half of New Year’s Day. But by evening, the area’s first baby of the new year arrived!
Sebastian Lawrence came into the world at 7:43 pm on January 1st, weighing 5 pounds, 8 ounces. Proud parents Amanda and Jeff Walth, of Wishek, say they knew from the beginning there was a chance that their son would be delivered on New Year’s Day but say there were surprised to learn Sebastian was the first baby born among the two Bismarck hospitals. Sebastian was delivered at St. Alexius by Mid Dakota OBGYN Rhonda Schafer-McLean, MD. To make the birth even more unique, one of Sebastian’s NICU nurses was also a New Year’s Day baby 50 years ago.
St. Alexius’ last baby born in 2009 missed the New Year’s deadline by five hours. At 7:16 pm New Year’s Eve, Alessandra Rai was born weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces. Her parents, Penelope and Josh Lachenmeier of Bismarck, say the family had been taking bets on whether or not she would arrive on New Year’s Day. They also say Alessandra’s delivering physician, Dr. Schafer-McClean was hoping deliver the first baby of the new year.
More babies are born at St. Alexius Medical Center than any other hospital in Western North Dakota.
